不曉得大家有在關注泰國反對軍政府的抗爭運動嗎？

上週日Taiwan Alliance for Thai Democracy - 台灣推動泰國民主聯盟 （TATD）在北車大廳舉辦一場宣講活動，現場約有一兩百人到場支持，部分媒體也做了報導。

活動訴求很清楚，就是反對泰國的獨裁軍政府。

昨天TATD拜會時代力量 New Power Party ，我們進行了一場有意義的對話，會中英文、泰文及中文夾雜。

新南向政策是政府的大方向，作為民間社會，我們可以從關注泰國的政情開始。

還記得前陣子台灣曾喊出 #奶茶聯盟 嗎？昨天在會中，TATD的朋友表示，台灣是民主陣線的重要成員，他們真心希望能有更多台灣朋友來關注他們的訴求。

On August 17, 2020 Taiwan Alliance for Thai Democracy (TATD) called at New Power Party in Taipei. Both sides had a fruitful and productive meeting.

The main purpose of the meeting was for TATD to share their thoughts on the demonstration currently widespread in Thailand as well as the gathering TATD organized at Taipei Main Station on August 16. New Power Party expressed its grave concerns about the protest and its support for Thai students in Taiwan in pursuit of human rights and democracy.

Taiwan has been considered a beacon of democracy in Asia for years. The Taiwanese society and its people have demonstrated staunch support for Hong Kongers during their fight against the ruthless Hong Kong government and the Chinese Communist regime.

What’s happening in Bangkok, Thailand is another brave fight against authoritarian rule. New Power Party urges the Taiwanese society to pay more attention to the protest in Thailand and voice necessary support for the vulnerable.

【我一生最受用的英文文法學習觀念】

從以前學習、教授英文到現在，我自己最受用的觀念之一，莫過於以前在哥大念研究所時教授曾經與博士班學生分享的：語言規則有分「硬規則」和「軟規則」。

前者大多我們學了不會有什麼問題，真正比較會讓我們覺得「背了又忘」、「學不會」的是後者。

到底什麼是「軟規則」呢？通常「軟規則」的使用，要「看上下文、狀況」而定 (more context-dependent)，比較沒有「硬規則」那樣黑與白、可以死記。

今天就以「介系詞」和「名詞可數性」來跟大家探討軟硬的差別。

【介系詞】
片語中 out of the blue (突然間)、cast doubt on (質疑)、speak of the devil (說曹操曹操到) 的 of, on, 和 of 三個介系詞，很少學生會覺得難、或是用錯。

為什麼呢？介系詞不是很難嗎？因為大家在背、記這些片語的時候，不太需要思考這些介系詞所代表的意義。

但為什麼當我問你「對我來說」是 For me, 還是 To me 時，無法馬上判定呢？為什麼我問你是 the advocate of 還是 the advocate for (前者正確) 時，你會覺得難呢？為什麼學過 pay attention to 的台灣學生 10 個有超過一半在使用時，還是會用成 pay attention on 呢？

這邊的 of 和 on 介系詞所構成的難度，明顯與前者不同。
後者才是「軟式」結構，才是我們在使用使用時容易錯的。但是文法書通常寫的是比較簡單的「硬結構」。為什麼呢？因為好寫啊。因為軟文法的學習，需要跟讀者討論、互動、了解使用者「怎麼想」。

【名詞可數性學習】

• 英文名詞可數的，有像是 book、cat、dog、car 這些字。（難嗎？一點也不對吧哈哈)

• 不可數名詞有 feedback、evidence、equipment、gossip (稍微有一點點難齁，因為中文會有很多反饋、很多證據、很多設備、很多八卦這樣的表達）。

但雖然上面不可數名詞的部分已經有點難度，整體來說還是「硬名詞」。什麼是軟名詞？

「老師，什麼時候 effort 可以數啊？」
「老師，是 work experience 還是 work experiences 啊」
「老師～請問 development 可以數嗎？怎麼有時有 s 有時沒有啊？」
「老師～為什麼美國人說 a lot of discussion 不是 a lot of discussions?」

這些叫做「軟名詞」，需要用上下文判斷，需要看使用的人所要表達的概念。

And it’s just the “interlocking”, they are talking about interlocking bylaws that are implemented very sneakily they say in a governmental structure, not only through China, but including through the government of the US. And they say pay very close attention to California. because their “bylaws” that were interlocking with that type of regime, this was based on agendas for global control, this was not based on agenda for serenity and sovereignty to US. This was based on a global agenda. This bylaws - so anybody that looks at California, and what’s happening there, you’re going to see it.
